Good evening everyone! For those who don’t know me, I’m James, Mark’s best man and his partner-in-crime since we were five years old – back when his biggest life goal was to become a professional dinosaur.
First, I’d like to thank Mark and Sophie’s parents, John and Linda, and Robert and Susan, for not only bringing up these two amazing people but also for putting together this beautiful celebration. And of course, a huge thank you to all the bridesmaids – you all look absolutely stunning today.
You know, preparing for this speech was tricky. There are so many stories I could tell about Mark – like the time he tried to convince our entire 6th-grade class that he was secretly a ninja, or when he attempted to bake cookies in college and somehow managed to set off three fire alarms. But Sophie’s father is here, and Mark specifically paid me not to mention certain stories… though he never said anything about the ninja incident!
I remember the exact moment Mark told me about Sophie. We were at our usual Thursday night pub quiz, and for the first time in fifteen years, he wasn’t focused on winning. Instead, he couldn’t stop talking about this incredible woman he’d met at his cousin’s wedding. ‘She’s different,’ he said. And he was right – she was the first person who could match his obscure Star Wars knowledge and actually appreciated his infamous dad jokes.
Sophie, I need to thank you for three things: First, for making my best friend happier than I’ve ever seen him. Second, for introducing us to your friend Emma, who later became my wife – I definitely got the better end of that deal! And third, for finally teaching Mark that wearing socks with sandals isn’t, and never will be, fashionable.
Mark, my friend, my brother – watching you grow from that kid who ate glue (sorry, mate, had to mention it) into the man you are today has been incredible. You’ve always been there for me – through breakups, job changes, and that regrettable phase when I thought I could pull off a mohawk. You were my best man three years ago, and you gave a speech so touching that I’ve been worried about living up to it ever since.
But what really makes me proud to be standing here today is seeing the person you’ve become with Sophie. Together, you two don’t just make sense – you make magic. You challenge each other, support each other, and most importantly, you make each other laugh. Even if Sophie’s laugh is more of a snort sometimes – sorry, Sophie, but we’ve all heard it!
To the happy couple – they say marriage is like a deck of cards. In the beginning, all you need is two hearts and a diamond. By the end, you’re looking for a club and a spade! But looking at you two, I know you’ll only ever need those hearts.
So, please raise your glasses to Mark and Sophie. May your love continue to grow stronger each day, may your home be filled with laughter, and may you always remember that marriage is not about finding someone you can live with – it’s about finding someone you can’t live without.
And Sophie, just remember – if he ever drives you crazy, I have plenty more stories I can share! To the bride and groom!
